Oscar Drama; A Punch and A Sorry Kiss

Oscar Drama; A Punch and A Sorry Kiss

The Cinema Times

The Cinema Times, Kathmandu – To make a joke about someone’s medical condition without knowing how difficult it is for that person is definitely not okay in the name of comedy.

All is well, that ends well! Yes, the reel or real punch drama that became the talk of the town which even overshadowed the Oscar winners has ended with both parties apologizing. Both, Will Smith and Chris Rock have posted an apology note.

The Academy Awards was in full swing and suddenly a seemingly violent altercation between Chris Rock and Will Smith left viewers speechless. Will Smith came up and punched Chris Rock in the face after the comedian made a joke about Smith’s wife, Jada Pinkett Smith’s hair.

Jada is seen either with a turban on her head or bald, these few years. So, Chris referenced Jada’s bald head and asked when she was coming out with “G.I. Jane 2”. G.I. Jane is a cinema about a woman in Navy Seal training. In order to complete her training, she shaves her head. This joke crossed the line; Jada was seen rolling her eyes at the very mention of it. It is then Will took matters in his hand.

Jada has been open about the pain of her hair loss. “I was in the shower one day and had just a handful of hair in my hands. Oh my god, am I going bald?” It was not her choice to go bald. It is a medical condition. Jada has a condition called alopecia, which causes excessive hair fall. She was scared of losing her hair, and was seen in a turban most of the time. It was only last year; she debuted her shaved head and looked absolutely stunning while doing it.

To make a joke about someone’s medical condition without knowing how difficult it is for that person is definitely not okay in the name of comedy. Realizing that, Chris Rock, on his apology note, posted, “Comedy is never about poking fun at or making lite of people with major ordeals happening in their lives. With that said, I sincerely apologize to my friends Jada Pinkett Smith, Will Smith and the rest of the Smith family for the disrespect and disregard I displayed which was unfortunately broadcast for the world to see.”

Will Smith also regretted his actions and called it unacceptable and inexcusable. He said that he reacted emotionally as a joke about Jada’s medical condition was too much for him to bear. He publicly apologized to Chris, the Academy and everyone watching around the world saying there is no place for violence in a world of love and kindness.

An hour of the altercation, Will won Best Actor for his role in King Richard.
